Tindley Temple was built in the 1920s, after the congregation of East Calvary United Methodist Church outgrew their building on Bainbridge Street. The Church is named for the Pastor at the time, Reverend Dr. Charles A. Tindley.

Dr. Tindley wrote "I'll Overcome Some Day" in 1901. The song later influenced the powerful 1960s Civil Rights anthem, "We Shall Overcome."
