In 1922, the Philadelphia Division of UNIA held meetings at the Salem Baptist Church on the corner of 12th and Bainbridge Street. The President at that time was the Honorable L.A. Francis, and the Lady President was Estella Matthews.
Founded by Marcus Garvey, the Universal Negro Improvement Association formed a division in Philadelphia and welcomed black men and women interested in promoting African American pride to become members of the organization.
