Biographical Text
The daughter of Virginian sharecroppers, Minnie Whitney migrated to Philadelphia in 1919 to work as a domestic. By 1929 Whitney had married, borne two children and moved to Harlem, only to return to Philadelphia in 1972. Whitney's story is characterized by her disillusionment and disappointment of conditions in the North.
