Kitty Woodard's Interview
Listen to and explore the curated OHMS index for Kitty Woodard's interview, created by Anastasia Amand in Spring 2016.
Kathryn ("Kitty") Fambro Woodard (1911-2003), born in Fort Valley, Georgia, moved to Philadelphia with her family when she was eight years old. Coming from middle-class parents who were both committee persons in Philadelphia ward politics, Woodard also became involved politically. She married Forrest White Woodard, the publisher of the Philadelphia Independent, which was one of the prominent Black newspapers of its time. Kitty took over as publisher when her husband died until she sold it in 1966. She worked hard through politics to keep peace for Philadelphians while also focusing on raising her family at home.
