Mrs. Utensie Hillian Honored With Banquet
The seating capacity of the gymnasium of the Zion Baptist Church, Broad and Venango Streets, was taxed last Friday evening when members of the congregation and friends of Mrs. Utensie Hillian gathered for a tesitmonial banquet prior to her retirement after 20 years as Principal of the Church's Day Care Center.
The Center under Mrs. Hillian's leadership has been commended for its work by State and Federal agencies.
Relatives of the guest of honor and her husband, Fletcher Hillian, a member of the Zion Baptist Church's Board of Deacons, came from Southern States to join in the festivities.
Mrs. Varnell Holloman, a niece of the guest of honor presided.
Among the participants were: Revs. William Glenn and Joseph DeBerry, associate ministers of the Zion Church; the pastor, Dr. Leon H. Sullivan and Mrs. Sullivan; Mrs. Odessa Brown, Miss Charlotta Carter, William Moore, a deacon; City Councilwoman, Ethel Allen; Louis Ashford, chairman of the Church's Board of Deacons; Mrs. Maude Metthews, Mrs. Bernice Spellman, Eustace Gay, Church School Superintendent, Mrs. Annie Davis, and Mrs. Carter, assistant principal.
The guest of honor was showered with gifts which she acknowledged in brief remarks.
