Workers at the Midvale Steel Plant in Coatesville, Pa.

Title

Workers at the Midvale Steel Plant in Coatesville, Pa.

Subject

Steel mill workers, Midvale Steel and Ordinance Company, Coatesville, Pennsylvania

Description

An African-American worker and a white worker at Midvale Steel and Ordinance Company's plant in Coatesville, PA c. 1920. Co-operation between African American and white workers was essential to Pennsylvania's prominent steel industry, because of the high labor involved in producing steel. Within a decade of incorporating African-American workers, Midvale Steel Company treated their African American and immigrant workers uncommonly well, even compared to other mills in the North.
